Cinco de Mayo ..... What????

Holidays are always a tough one to maintain sobriety.....for anyone, but really challenging for the addict. Everyone is partying....but are they really? The one thing about sobriety that amazes me is the ability to realize that you don't have to be drunk or stoned or high to have a good time. The running joke "Good clean fun!" But let's look at that for a minute.

When you are sober you don't forget or blackout. You don't regret poor decisions made while intoxicated, you don't go to jail for DUI or possession, and you don't spend all your money chasing the high. Gerard Butler stated "I don't miss it. Now it's as if I never had a drink in my life. At one point, I could never have conceived going out and not drinking but, as time goes on, you lose the urge and the insecurity that often makes us drink in the first place."

More money, memories you actually remember, friends that stick around and don't use you for your stash, a job that lasts more than 6 months, and pride. All of these are things that sobriety brings. The bottle is not your friend, nor is the drug of choice. The day you realize that is the day you understand you can beat your demon.

Fact is, you don't have to drink or "party" to have a good time and enjoy life. The majority of people who are now sober and once did drugs or were alcoholics will confess their lives are better sober. The idea of a holiday or some random day in May being a "reason" to get wasted seems just crazy. Make the right decision, make the best choice for you, decide what is best and do it. Life with a clear head is unlike any other, this I promise you.
