HOW does Vivitrol Work?????

VIVITROL® (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension) is a once-monthly medication for the treatment of alcohol dependence as well as for the prevention of relapse to opioid dependence, following opioid detoxification.

Vivitrol blocks the receptors in the brain that crave opioids and alcohol, thus decreasing cravings and furthering successful rehabilitation.

VIVITROL is the first and only non-narcotic, non-addictive, once-monthly medication approved for the treatment of opioid dependence. Treatment with VIVITROL should be part of a comprehensive management program that includes psychosocial support.

Differences in Suboxone and Vivitrol

Unlike Suboxone, Vivitrol is NOT a narcotic and there is no risk of addiction. Suboxone contains a small amount of opiate and a blocking agent, while Vivitrol is ONLY A BLOCKING MEDICATION. This gives someone in recovery time and energy to focus on a successful treatment plan knowing that getting high while taking Vivitrol is not an option.

Suboxone is widely abused and has to be taken by mouth daily.

Vivitrol is taken via injection once a month.

Comparing Suboxone with Vivitrol will show you how these drugs differ:

  • Suboxone can cause drug dependence and withdrawal symptoms if it’s not taken as directed; Vivitrol is non-habit-forming and does not produce withdrawal-like side effects if you don’t take it as prescribed after the detoxification process.

  • Suboxone is used mainly to treat opiate drug addiction; Vivitrol is prescribed for alcohol or opiate drug addiction (pain medications).

  • Suboxone must be taken every day by mouth; Vivitrol can be taken as a monthly shot that is injected into the hip by a licensed professional.
